International Jury for IFFI announced with filmmaker Pablo Cesar of Argentina as Chairman

The International Jury for the 51st edition of the International Film Festival of India has been announced with eminent filmmakers from across the world. Pablo Cesar of Argentina has been named as the Chairman of the jury. The other jury members are Prasanna Vithanage of Sri Lanka, Abu Bakr Shawky of Austria, Priyadarshan of India, and Rubaiyat Hossain of Bangladesh.

The Chairman of the jury, Argentine filmmaker Pablo Cesar has contributed to African cinema by making the critically acclaimed films, Equinox, the Garden of the Roses, Los dioses de agua, and Aphrodite, the Garden of the Perfumes.

Former India striker Abhishek Yadav was appointed as AIFF’s first deputy general secretary.

Former India striker Abhishek Yadav has been appointed as the first deputy general secretary of All India Football Federation (AIFF) after the sports body decided to create a new post in its hierarchy. It is one of the rare instances when a former Indian team player has been appointed to a high-ranking position in the sport’s national federation.

The 40-year-old former international, who has played with the likes of Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri, Mahesh Gawli, and Climax Lawrence, has been serving as the national team’s director since January 2018.

Indian-American Becomes US Army’s First Chief Information Officer

Indian-American Dr. Raj Iyer has taken over as the first Chief Information Officer of the US Army, after the Pentagon created the position in July 2020.

One of the highest-ranking Indian-American civilians in the US Department of Defense, Raj Iyer, who holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Army and directs representation of the secretary in matters relating to information management/information technology (IT), the Pentagon said in a statement.

Dr. Raj Iyer will direct the execution of policies and programs to modernize the US Army to achieve a digital overmatch against near-peer adversaries such as China and Russia.

Justice Hima Kohli Sworn In As First Woman Chief Justice Of Telangana High Court

Judge Hima Kohli was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court becoming the first woman to hold the position. She is also the only woman Chief Justice across 25 high courts of India. The oath-taking ceremony that took place in Raj Bhavan was administered by governor Tamilisai Soundararajan with state chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao and families of ministers and judges in attendance.

JK Maheshwari Sworn In As Chief Justice Of Sikkim High Court

Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court.

Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oath of office to Justice Maheshwari during a function held in Raj Bhavan.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, his ministerial colleagues, members of the bar and bench of the high court, and senior officials attended the event.

Major reshuffle in Army, Lt Gen Shantanu Dayal to take charge as Deputy Chief of Staff

Indian Army has undergone a major reshuffle at the top within the Army Headquarters and the various other formations including the Corps Commanders, administrative and training institutions witnessing the change of guard. A new Deputy Chief of Army Staff (DCOAS) will take charge soon.

Lt Gen Shantanu Dayal has been named the new DCOAS. Lt Gen Dayal is the Corps Commander of the Tejpur based 4 Corps. He will take the place of Lt Gen SS Hasabnis who superannuated on December 31 as soon as his replacement arrives.

Karan Bajwa to head Google Cloud in the Asia Pacific

Google Cloud announced the elevation of Karan Bajwa as its new leader for the Asia Pacific. Presently, Bajwa leads Google Cloud in India.

He will lead all regional revenue and go-to-market operations for Google Cloud, including on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Google Workspace as the company announced in a statement.

Pankaj Mithal takes oath as new chief justice of J&K and Ladakh high court

In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha administered the oath of office to Justice Pankaj Mithal as the new Chief Justice of the Common High Court for the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh at a swearing-in ceremony in Jammu.

Sanjay Kapoor elected AICF President, Bharat Chauhan retains secretary’s post

Sanjay Kapoor was elected president of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) while Bharat Singh Chauhan retained the secretary’s post in the polls held online.

Sanjay Kapoor, representing Uttar Pradesh Chess Association, defeated incumbent PR Venketrama Raja in a close contest. Kapoor received 33 votes as against 31 of Raja.

Austin becomes 1st Black Pentagon chief

Lloyd J. Austin, a West Point graduate who rose to the Army’s elite ranks and marched through racial barriers in a 41-year career, won Senate confirmation on 22 Jan to become the nation’s first Black secretary of defense.

The 93-2 vote gave President Joe Biden his 2nd Cabinet member; Avril Haines was confirmed on 20 Jan as the 1st woman to serve as director of national intelligence.

Mr. Austin said he is especially proud to be the first Black secretary of defense.
